Alibaba supplier vs direct Chinese manufacturer: compare the role, not the label
Understand marketplace, manufacturer and trader roles. Read supplier assessments, compare RFQs and evaluate payment protection without treating a badge as product approval.

The practical answer
Alibaba is a channel; a manufacturer or trading company is a business role. A manufacturer can sell through Alibaba, while a direct website can belong to a trader. Compare production control, commercial responsibility, evidence and the order/payment mechanism rather than assuming one route is always cheaper or safer.
In this guide
Start with four separate questions
Who introduces the product? Who makes it? Who signs the order? Who receives payment? A single company may perform all four roles, or a brand owner, trading company, factory and exporter may divide them. A marketplace listing does not answer the whole chain.
A trading company can consolidate products, communicate across factories or handle smaller orders. A manufacturer may offer closer process access or customization. Neither advantage is automatic: verify the actual arrangement, subcontracting and responsibilities for your product.
- Ask which processes and models the company produces itself.
- Identify the contracting seller and the entity responsible for defects, delays and warranty.
- Evaluate lead time, MOQ, sample representativeness and change control alongside price.

Read the assessment report behind the badge
Alibaba’s Verified Supplier information explicitly includes trading companies, manufacturers and companies doing both. The report can provide evidence about identity, facilities, production resources, quality systems and subcontracting. Read its business type, site, date and scope rather than treating the badge as shorthand for “factory”.
Alibaba states that assessments are supplied by independent third parties and does not guarantee sellers’ product or certificate authenticity through this assessment. A site assessment is not a test of your exact product, your current shipment or the seller’s ability to honour every promise. Ask what has changed since the report.

Send one specification through both routes
Use the same model, materials, quantity tiers, sample requirements, packaging, testing/document needs and target destination. Record tooling, customization limits, quote validity, lead time and payment terms. Compare the same Incoterm and named location.
A cheaper EXW offer and a higher FOB offer are not directly comparable without the missing cost responsibilities. Incoterms do not decide ownership, payment schedules or product acceptance. A low headline price with unspecified materials or a different MOQ is also not a like-for-like offer.

Check the actual order and payment mechanism
Trade Assurance describes protection for eligible Alibaba orders paid through its supported process. Agree the specification and commitments in the online order, retain communications, and read the applicable terms and claim requirements before paying. The marketing page is not the full contract.
Do not assume a badge, an Alibaba contact or an invoice mentioning the platform makes a separate bank transfer protected. Confirm the payment route on the order’s own checkout and read current eligibility, evidence requirements and deadlines. A direct purchase needs its own agreed payment, acceptance and dispute arrangements.
Choose a working relationship you can evidence
A direct factory route can still depend on an exporter, salesperson or subcontractor. An intermediary can be commercially useful while adding another party whose role must be clear. Ask who controls corrections, owns tooling, communicates specification changes and accepts responsibility if goods differ from the approved sample.
Move from public leads to quotations, samples and proportionate independent checks. Do not move from a directory badge straight to deposit approval. ChinaConnect247’s shortlist and sourcing research identify questions and evidence; they are not a marketplace endorsement or supplier certification.
Worked RFQ comparison: why “direct” is not a total cost
Illustrative comparison worksheet. No supplier quotation or client result is represented, and no unit prices are invented.
- Offer
- Marketplace seller quotes FOB at a named port
- Unresolved difference
- Packing specification and carton dimensions are missing.
- What makes it comparable
- Confirm export packing and the exact FOB location/edition.
- Offer
- Direct factory quotes EXW at its site
- Unresolved difference
- Collection, export handling and freight costs are not supplied.
- What makes it comparable
- Identify and quote the additional responsibilities on the same destination basis.
- Offer
- Trader quotes a lower MOQ
- Unresolved difference
- Manufacturer, sample source and defect remedy are unclear.
- What makes it comparable
- Confirm producer traceability, approved sample and the entity responsible for correction.
Leave missing costs as “not quoted”, not zero. You cannot declare a cheapest landed option until the specification and cost responsibilities match.
Practical checklist
Tick items while reading or print this page for your working notes. These ticks stay only on the current page and are not saved to My Fair. A completed checklist records your review, not a supplier approval.
